Welcome to the

Toledo Historical Swordsmanship Society

The Toledo Historical Swordsmanship Society (THSS) is a Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) group based out of Toledo, Ohio. We are part of the growing revival of historical combat arts dating as far back as the 14th century. We study a large range of historical weaponry focusing on Historical accuracy using source material that the old masters had the good grace to leave behind.

HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts. HEMA is devoted to recreating the lost Martial Arts systems recorded in treatises, or manuals, from historical Europe.

What is a typical practice like?

A typical practice will go something like this. Some light warm ups / stretching. Next we will review from the previous class to make sure the concepts stuck. Then we will explore some new material. Depending on time we will either do some sparring or some drilling, incorporating the concepts discussed on that day.

How much does it Cost to be a member of the T.H.S.S.?

The first session is completely free, after that club dues are $20 / month. This grants access to practices and any available loaner equipment.

Additionally, all members are required to have an active HEMA Alliance Membership, which runs $26 / year. This provides insurance at any HEMA Alliance affiliated activity, as well as discounts to various HEMA equipment providers.
